Analytical Essay on Pride and Prejudice

Introduction
Jane Austin was the first to publish a masterpiece novel concerning the daily lives of ordinary people. Until then the themes were more public or general ones. It was in the Romantic era when such novels were becoming popular.

Jane Austen and her Works
She was born in 1775 in Stevenson, a town in England and lived there for most of her life. Her father was a clergyman, with eight children, and lived in a middle class society. This reflects in her books, as her disdain for the upper class is evident. She was home schooled and enjoyed reading, which led to her being well read. Her father’s encouragement and her own enjoyment in reading led Jane to become very well read.

Her habit was to write when at gatherings and social events. Whilst others talked, she would sit in a corner and write. This is how Pride and Prejudice was written. By 1815, the Prince of Wales favored her books and they became known everywhere. She wrote during the period of the American war of independence and the industrial revolution but ignored these events. She died of cancer in 1817 and was buried in Winchester having written six novels. Continue reading Analytical Essay on Pride and Prejudice

Informal Essay on Drug Addiction

Unregulated and excessive use of drugs is popularly referred to as drug addiction and even drug abuse.

In recent decades, drug addiction has emerged as one of the major problems facing society. Drug addiction essentially refers to a condition in which one is physically dependent on a drug. It is characterized by the development of tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. When an individual begins to develop tolerance of a drug, the individual will realize that he or she needs more of the drug to achieve a desired level of pleasure or satisfaction. Additionally, when an individual who is addicted to drugs does not get access to the desired drugs, he begins to suffer from uncontrollable and painful convulsions, depression, vomiting, headaches, and many other maladies.

Drug addiction not only affects the individual who is addicted to the drug, but it also affects the families of that individual, as well as the society at large. The individual who is addicted to the drug often realizes that he cannot function well without the drug. This can cause problems both at work and at home. The drug addiction causes the individual to develop feelings of frustration and anger, inadequacy, and emotional insecurity. Once an individual begins experiencing these symptoms, those close to him, especially family members, also begin to be negatively affected since they find it difficult to relate to the individual in the same way as they used to before the individual became addicted to the drugs. Moreover, the drug addict may not also be able to function well at the workplace, resulting in a demotion or even the loss of a job. Continue reading Informal Essay on Drug Addiction

5-Page Essay on Global Warming

Very few people will argue against the fact that the earth is getting increasingly warmer given the way summers are becoming hotter, the evidence that glaciers are melting, the sea levels are rising, and the way the weather in many parts of the world is increasingly becoming unpredictable.

All these characteristics of the weather can be summed up into one term, and that is global warming. It is only in recent decades that the idea of global warming is caused by humans has emerged. Environmental groups and governments worldwide began to take notice after scientists theorized that mankind, through certain activities, are actually changing the earth’s environment and climate. Even though the changes are taking place slowly, scientists warn that it could accelerate soon. They have even stated that in the present century, the 21 century, the earth will become warmer than it has been during the last four centuries.

Another cause of global warming is due to factors such as the relationship between the earth’s position, axis, revolution around the sun and rotation on its own axis.

Major volcanic eruptions have also been linked to natural global warming. The gradual changes that occur due to natural events are considered to take place very slowly, over several centuries. Most animal species survive these changes by migrating from one geographic location to another. Continue reading 5-Page Essay on Global Warming

5-Paragraph Essay on Gun Control

A number of years ago, a tragedy occurred at Columbine High School, wherein a public shooting led to the deaths of innocent students and teachers. The high publicized incident served as a catalyst for anti-gun lobbying groups. Although this tragedy was not completely attributed to lax gun control laws, it still brought a new focus to the gun control debate. To gain a better understanding of the gun control controversy, it is essential to know some general facts about firearms. This helps to address some of the controversial issues surrounding the Columbine school tragedy.

In general, there are three general kinds of firearms: shotguns, handguns, and rifles. However, shotguns and rifles are both regarded as long guns. Another classification concerning firearms is that semi-automatic firearms fire a single bullet each time a person pulls the trigger. Because it is automatic, this gun type involves removing the expended bullet’s shell and loading a fresh bullet with each pull of the trigger. Additionally, there are complete automatic firearms with the capability of firing several bullets with a single pull of the trigger. Sometimes, such firearms are known as machine guns. Compare and Contrast Essay on Music

In an earlier essay, the value of music was stressed. Through the centuries, music has grown to be an important part of human life. Regardless of the source, music flows naturally if a person allows it to. The passion as well as creativity in music is evident in the classical compositions performed with a variety of wind, string, and acoustic instruments, as well as in contemporary rappers enjoying a variety of favorite rhythms. Clearly, music evolves as time goes by. To understand how music has changed from the classical age to contemporary times, it is important to compare classical and popular music.

First, some individuals assert that classical music is superior to all other kinds of music. In terms of performance as well as training, they argue that classical music cannot be surpassed. To study and then perform a piece of classical music, one has to undertake rigorous training. In other words, classical music is for those who are serious and studious in their musical education. On the other hand, many think that pop music can be composed and recorded by virtually anyone. The assertion is that pop is very easy to learn. Although no one would say that pop does not qualify as music, the widespread contention is that pop cannot be placed on the same artistic level with classical music. Nonetheless, pop artistes, along with their fans, refute this claim. According to them, performances in pop music require considerable musical knowledge and talent. Additionally, one must ensure that he/she produces an appealing melody or rhythm.

Descriptive Essay on My Classroom

My classroom is tidy, clean, and airy. This is because it is regularly cleaned by the school custodial staff. Every morning, the school custodians open the windows of the class, clean the floor and then arrange the students’ desks so everything in the class is tidy before my classmates and I come to class. In order to maintain the classroom in a clean state, our teachers discourage us from eating or drinking anything when in class. Whenever someone breaks this rule and eats or drinks anything in the classroom, that student is punished by being asked to sweep and clean the whole classroom alone.

The classroom has very wide windows that let in plenty of light which then makes it easier for students to read their books. The wide windows also reduce the need to use artificial light. This is why the electric lights are only switched on early in the morning or late in the evening when it becomes dark. The wide windows of my classroom all have window panes that enable us to close and open the windows whenever we need to. For instance, when it starts raining, we use the panes to close the windows. My classroom has a front door that is green in color. The green color of the door matches my green cardigan, which is part of my school uniform. Continue reading Descriptive Essay on My Classroom

Definition Essay on Ambition

Webster’s defines ambition as “a particular goal or aim: something that a person hopes to do or achieve: a desire to be successful, powerful, or famous; a desire to do things and be active.

Generally in our society to be ambitious is considered a virtue. However, I am not too sure. Adolf Hitler was ambitious, so was Al Capone, but neither can be regarded as virtuous. Ambition is dangerous in my view unless it is directed to virtue. Success, whatever that means, powerful, and famous seem to me attributes of arrogance and pride.

Success, power, and fame are presented today as the keys to happiness, and the path to a worthwhile life. The media, self help books, pyramid schemes, lotteries are all geared to promote this illusion as reality. Men like Ford, Rockefeller, and other industrialists are held up as examples. Donald Trump and Bill Gates as well. Then Hollywood frames individuals, with money, success and fame. Tom Cruise, Elizabeth Taylor were crowned as being rich famous powerful and successful. The music industry does the same. It lifts up individuals who have extraordinary success, power and fame. Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. They were led to disaster, divorces, unstable marriages, suicides and drug overdoses. Politicians, such as Nixon found success, power, and fame destructive. Expository Essay on Compassion

Every major religion gives compassion a high place as a virtue in human nature. The Dalai Lama said “compassion is a necessity, not a luxury, and that without it humanity cannot survive.” This moves it from a divine attribute to a practical human necessity for the survival of humanity. Compassion is to be desired and we will examine the reasons.

Compassion is an emotion similar to love; however, it is uniquely related to suffering. Compassion is the feeling of empathy we have toward the suffering of others, and the desire to help.

Within compassion, there is an aspect of quantity and quality. It can be seen to be deep and passionate and motivate vigorous action. The root of the word compassion is “co suffering”, hence, it co shares the suffering, and motivates action to help.

Compassion is desirable as a key motivator of people. In particular, it motivates them not only to feel the pain of those suffering, but also drives their motivation to do something to alleviate it.

It identifies with others in an empathetic way. This is the opposite reaction to people that those who cause suffering have. They are callous, ruthless and cruel. The compassionate person will respond to the humanity of others, not their ethnicity or religion. The person motivated with compassion will seek to help the suffering. This is the opposite of the attitude that causes war, terrorism, human trafficking, drug dealing and such evils, which cause suffering to many. A lack of compassion can lead to such atrocities as the Nazi Holocaust, the Bosnian Serb ethnic cleansing, and the Rwanda genocide. An individual who cannot empathize with the suffering of another human being will not only ignore the suffering of others, but may even contribute to it.
